About greenmetrics.ai

greenmetrics.ai is a Lisbon-based startup at the forefront of climate adaptation and environmental sustainability. We develop cutting-edge technological solutions using smart sensors, IoT connectivity and data analytics to collect and process environmental data, enabling cities to improve resilience against extreme weather events like floods, droughts and heatwaves.

We envision a future in which technology and human ingenuity are allies of the natural world, a future where data guides us on the path to a more sustainable, balanced and resilient way of living, preserving the delicate balance of our planet for future generations.

We are an independent and profitable startup with proven technology operating in 15 cities across Portugal and 5 cities in Brazil. We’re growing rapidly with global ambitions and we need your contribution to help us accelerate toward our goals.

The Role

If you want to build stuff that actually matters, this could be the role for you. At greenmetrics.ai, we’re building intelligent systems to help cities improve adaptation and resilience to climate change and we’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer (IoT & Cloud Infrastructure) to join our team and help us scale.

In this role, you’ll work on the backbone that connects environmental sensors to our cloud, turning raw data into tools that monitor extreme weather events and protect communities. From real-time data pipelines and robust APIs, scalable databases, secure integrations and alert systems, you’ll be at the core of how our technology works. You’ll be working with our data science and operations teams to make it all happen.

If you’re looking for something more purposeful than just coding, this might be your chance to make a direct contribution to solving a huge global challenge with your skills. If you’re excited to own big projects and searching for an opportunity to make a real impact, we’d love to hear from you.

You will be responsible for:

  • Designing and maintaining data pipelines to ingest, process and store large volumes of real-time sensor data.
  • Building and scaling REST/GraphQL APIs to serve dashboards, analytics and third-party integrations.
  • Managing and optimizing time-series databases (e.g. TimescaleDB, InfluxDB).
  • Implementing real-time alerting systems and rule-based engines for anomaly detection and risk thresholds.
  • Integrating external datasets (weather, hydrology, municipal feeds) with internal data flows.
  • Ensuring system performance, security and reliability across deployments in multiple municipalities.
  • Collaborating with front-end engineers to support interactive maps and real-time dashboards.

Your profile:

  • 7+ years in software engineering, ideally in SaaS or data-intensive systems.
  • Strong back-end expertise in Python (FastAPI/Django/Flask) or Node.js (Nest.js/Express).
  • Proven experience with HTTP data transfer protocols, MQTT is a plus.
  • Hands-on work with time-series data (TimescaleDB, InfluxDB).
  • Ability to design, build and run scalable APIs and deliver production-grade systems.
  • Experience delivering real-time features (websockets, event streams or similar).
  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms (GCP, AWS or Azure) and microservices deployment.
  • Interest in predictive analytics, machine learning or MLOps pipelines is a plus.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese.

What you’re looking for

  • Real ownership and autonomy by not just coding tasks, but being directly involved in decisions that define platform architecture and the future of climate risk management.
  • Competitive compensation where your expertise will be recognized, and exciting career growth opportunities in a rapidly scaling startup.
  • A stake in our future, with variable compensation aligned with company goals, giving you the opportunity to directly benefit from the impact we’re creating together.
  • We value a hybrid work culture that allows flexibility, where you can combine remote work with time at our office in Oeiras, Lisbon, choosing the balance that helps you perform at your best.
  • Impact with purpose, through the chance to build systems that protect communities from climate change and contribute to global climate resilience.
