About the Role
We are seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join the Roku Player SDK Team. This team is responsible for building and optimizing video playback experiences across Roku platforms, supporting millions of users globally—including for our flagship streaming service, Max.
You will help deliver high-quality, seamless video streaming through new playback features and ongoing improvements across WBD’s suite of Roku applications. This role involves close collaboration with other engineers and product stakeholders, with a focus on planning, feature development, and defect resolution.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain components of the Roku Player SDK for a range of Roku devices.
- Optimize streaming performance, ensuring low latency, high quality, and smooth playback using the Roku Media Player.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and engineering teams to enhance video playback experiences.
- Troubleshoot and resolve media-related issues such as buffering, DRM, and other BrightScript-specific challenges.
- Ensure code quality via unit testing, integration testing, and code reviews, aligned with Roku’s standards.
- Stay current on Roku technologies, SDK updates, and industry best practices to inform development.
- Author and maintain technical documentation related to Roku development, architecture, and solution approaches.
- Provide periodic on-call support for urgent production issues with guidance from senior team members.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of software development experience with a primary focus on Roku using BrightScript.
- Strong hands-on experience with the Roku SDK, BrightScript, and Roku Media Player.
- Solid understanding of software architecture, design principles, and performance tuning for Roku platforms.
- Proficiency with common development tools: IDEs, CI/CD, version control (e.g., Git), and code review platforms.
- Ability to debug moderately complex technical issues within the Roku ecosystem.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Effective communicator with the ability to create clear, concise technical documentation.
- Experience building scalable and testable Roku applications with a focus on user experience and device compatibility.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with scripting languages commonly used alongside Roku development.
- Experience mentoring or guiding junior developers is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
