This role is ideal for a leader who thrives on being deeply involved in the technical execution of marketing automation while also guiding and developing a high-performing team. As the director of marketing automation, you will spend the majority of your time (approximately 70%) working directly within marketing automation platforms to build, optimize, and review complex, data-driven marketing programs. The remaining time (approximately 30%) will be dedicated to managing and mentoring the team, overseeing project delivery, planning for upcoming work, and ensuring adherence to best practices and standards.

Duties And Responsibilities

Platform Expertise and Involvement

  • Assign resources and provide direction for complex projects, with a focus on maximizing team productivity and billability
  • Build, configure, and optimize marketing automation journeys, campaigns, and workflows within platforms such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and Marketo.
  • Provide oversight to your team's work by conducting in-platform QA, reviewing and testing automations and journeys built by team members, ensuring adherence to standards and best practices.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues directly in the platform and implement solutions efficiently.
  • Participate actively in project meetings (kick-offs, status updates, reviews), providing technical insights, answers to technical questions and hands-on expertise as projects progress.
  • Be an active participant in client calls as needed, providing insight, identifying potential issues, and answering questions on behalf of the marketing automation team
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for platform-related questions and escalations, both internally and with clients as needed.

Team Leadership & Management

  • Assign resources and provide direction for complex projects, with a focus on maximizing team productivity and billability
  • Mentor and support direct reports, offering guidance on technical growth, reviewing work quality, and sustaining team morale.
  • Approve timesheets, conduct annual performance reviews, and support career progression for team members.
  • Own the marketing automation process and ensure standards are being followed across brands
  • Provide planning and direction for complex projects as needed
  • Be the point of approval and review to ensure standards are being followed and steps are not being missed
  • Estimate level of effort for marketing automation efforts
  • Monitor and enact changes to preserve the financial health of omnichannel campaigns
  • Own communication streams with internal project teams and client IT departments as needed
  • Act as a point of escalation and support for other team members
  • Create and present annual performance reviews for direct reports

Job Requirements

  • 8 to 10+ years of hands-on marketing automation platform experience (SFMC, Marketo, or Eloqua)
  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud certification required
  • Expertise in AMP Script, SQL and server-side JavaScript
  • Marketing and advertising agency experience required
  • Proven experience in both executing and managing marketing automation campaigns in an agency environment.
  • Strong understanding of email marketing best practices
  • Experience using HTML and CSS to develop optimized emails
  • General understanding of the digital marketing landscape
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills
  • High proficiency in MS Excel
  • A team player with strong time management skills, the ability to motivate others to deliver excellence, and poise and focus under pressure
  • Strong organizational and written/oral communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Experience with SMS programs a plus
