Flight Software Engineer

Senior Flight Software Engineer (Rust) – $100–$110/hr – Remote or Santa Barbara, CA

A pioneering commercial space company is on a mission to deliver global omniscience. By providing easy access to the highest fidelity satellite data available, their work is helping humanity stay ahead of climate change, geopolitical risk, and global instability. This role sits at the heart of a company building an industry that hasn’t meaningfully existed before.

They are now seeking a Senior Flight Software Engineer to support the development and delivery of embedded flight software across spacecraft and payload systems. You’ll shape architecture, own key codebases, and guide integration from dev through to hardware deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop fault-tolerant flight software using async Rust
• Build command and control systems for autonomous spacecraft
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams across payload, avionics, and systems
• Lead peer reviews, testing, and software-hardware integration
• Own software documentation and interface design

You’ll need:

• 7+ years in high-reliability software (Rust or C/C++)
• 3+ years in embedded development on ARM SoCs (Linux or bare-metal)
• 2+ years with async/concurrent Rust code
• Deep understanding of performance optimization and memory management
• US Citizenship or Green Card Permit (for export control compliance - ITAR/EAR)

Bonus points for:

• Experience with Python, SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe
• Background in aerospace, control systems, or fault-critical environments
• Agile development exposure and systems-level thinking

This is a contract role offering $100–$110/hour. This role can be done Fully Remote or on-site in Santa Barbra, CA.
