Senior Software Engineer

Remote — United States

This is a fully remote position, but candidates must be based in the United States and authorized to work in the U.S.

Direct applicants only. We are recruiting directly for this position and are not accepting applications, introductions or candidate submissions from recruitment agencies or other third-party recruiters.

About EstateWorks

EstateWorks develops software for law firms and banks managing Trust & Estate work.

We’re a small, experienced team where everyone has a meaningful impact — both on the products we deliver and on the organization as a whole. We value people who take ownership, communicate well, identify problems without being prompted and follow things through.

We're also a flexible, lifestyle-friendly working environment. We care about what people accomplish rather than where or exactly when they work, and we aim to give people the flexibility to balance their work with the rest of their lives.

We’re looking to add a Senior Software Engineer to our team who combines strong technical skills with that mindset.

The Role

You’ll take significant responsibility for designing, building and maintaining parts of the EstateWorks platform.

This is a hands-on development role spanning the full stack — from database design through application code to the document-generation systems our clients rely on. You’ll work across multiple areas of the platform rather than a single narrow component, with real input into technical decisions and direct visibility into how your work performs in production.

You'll have considerable autonomy, and we'll expect you to take ownership of the areas you work on rather than simply waiting for the next task.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop and maintain applications and databases built around Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Develop clean, maintainable application code using Node.js/Next.js and related technologies.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across applications, databases and document-generation systems.
  • Take responsibility for performance, data integrity and reliability in the areas you work on.
  • Participate in technical design and code reviews.
  • Keep work visible through GitHub and our other collaboration tools and maintain appropriate technical documentation.
  • Contribute to our security, DevOps and SOC 2 programs.

What We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Takes ownership and follows work through to completion.
  • Shows initiative and identifies problems rather than waiting to be given a task.
  • Solves problems independently while knowing when to involve others.
  • Communicates well and keeps colleagues informed.
  • Is pragmatic and balances technical quality with business needs.
  • Enjoys working in a small team with broad responsibilities and considerable autonomy.

Technical Experience

We’re looking for substantial professional software-development experience, including:

  • Rock-solid software-engineering fundamentals, including Git, testing and disciplined deployment practices.
  • Strong Microsoft SQL Server experience, including T-SQL, stored procedures, relational data modeling and query optimization.
  • Experience with Node.js/Next.js, JavaScript/TypeScript or comparable technologies.

A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline is useful, but equivalent practical experience is equally valuable.

Useful Additional Experience

Experience in any of the following would be valuable but isn’t essential:

  • Software for legal, financial-services or other professional-services organizations.
  • Document assembly or automation platforms (e.g., HotDocs, Contract Express, Aspose.Words, Syncfusion DocIO), including rule-based/conditional document generation.
  • SSIS or SSRS.
  • SOC 2 or similar security and compliance environments.
