POSITION OVERVIEW:

Seeking a highly experienced Senior Electronics Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) supporting the FAA’s nationwide Voice System modernization efforts. This exempt-level leadership role is responsible for advancing the design, installation, and lifecycle management of critical aviation telecommunications infrastructure across the National Air Space (NAS), with specialized focus on transitioning voice switching systems, remote air-to-ground communications, and related networks. The SME will lead engineering teams across remote and high-impact sites, resolve complex technical challenges, and drive certification and performance improvements aligned with regulatory mandates and operational priorities. Requires greater than 70% travel

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead engineering strategy, system design, and execution of voice switch transitions and radio telecommunications deployments, including VSCS, RCAG, and RCO systems.

  • Oversee advanced troubleshooting and root-cause investigations of high-impact outages or system failures, ensuring rapid and sustainable recovery.

  • Direct and coordinate engineering teams on multi-site installations, upgrades, and technology integrations that impact FAA operations and modernization goals.

  • Develop engineering documentation, compliance protocols, training plans, and quality benchmarks across field teams and stakeholders.

  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and journeyman technicians, fostering knowledge transfer and technical excellence.

  • Liaise with FAA officials, contractors, and program managers to support audits, certifications, and long-term system sustainment.

  • Perform on-call emergency response and travel to remote locations as needed, often under time-sensitive operational demands.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Radio Technologies, Telecommunications, or equivalent; advanced certifications such as PE license or FAA-specific endorsements preferred.

  • 8+ years of progressive telecommunications engineering experience supporting aviation infrastructure, with specific expertise in FAA systems including VSCS, RCAG, and RCO.

  • Deep proficiency in RF and voice system engineering, network integration, and aviation-specific protocols and tools.

  • Proven experience managing engineering teams in field environments, including tower operations, remote site work, and harsh conditions.

  • Valid driver’s license, U.S. citizenship, and ability to obtain/maintain a government security clearance (with drug testing and background check).

  • Availability for extensive travel (>70%) and flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as dictated by operational needs.

  • Strong leadership, systems thinking, and communication skills, with demonstrated success in high-impact engineering roles.

Physical Demands:

This position requires physical capabilities consistent with senior-level field engineering work in support of federal aviation infrastructure. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods during site assessments and equipment installations
  • Ability to climb ladders, towers, and elevated platforms up to 100 feet using fall protection equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, components, and diagnostic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights while performing detailed technical tasks
  • Ability to travel long distances by car or air to reach remote or nationwide sites
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
  • Ability to adapt to variable work schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on operational needs and emergency response requirements

Working Conditions:

This role supports FAA telecommunications and radio systems across the National Airspace System (NAS) and involves dynamic field environments with leadership responsibilities.

  • Frequent travel (>70%) to FAA facilities, transmitter/receiver sites, and telecommunications hubs across the U.S.
  • Exposure to outdoor and elevated work environments, including rooftops, towers, and remote terrain
  • Work in secure federal facilities and restricted-access areas, requiring adherence to safety and security protocols
  • Oversight of team-based projects in field conditions, including mentoring and technical supervision
  • Flexible work hours and short-notice deployments in response to system outages, certifications, or scheduled upgrades
  • Compliance with federal safety standards, including use of PPE, fall protection, and RF exposure guidelines
  • Participation in background checks, drug testing, and security clearance processes as required by contract terms
