POSITION OVERVIEW:
Seeking a highly experienced Senior Electronics Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) supporting the FAA’s nationwide Voice System modernization efforts. This exempt-level leadership role is responsible for advancing the design, installation, and lifecycle management of critical aviation telecommunications infrastructure across the National Air Space (NAS), with specialized focus on transitioning voice switching systems, remote air-to-ground communications, and related networks. The SME will lead engineering teams across remote and high-impact sites, resolve complex technical challenges, and drive certification and performance improvements aligned with regulatory mandates and operational priorities. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead engineering strategy, system design, and execution of voice switch transitions and radio telecommunications deployments, including VSCS, RCAG, and RCO systems.
Oversee advanced troubleshooting and root-cause investigations of high-impact outages or system failures, ensuring rapid and sustainable recovery.
Direct and coordinate engineering teams on multi-site installations, upgrades, and technology integrations that impact FAA operations and modernization goals.
Develop engineering documentation, compliance protocols, training plans, and quality benchmarks across field teams and stakeholders.
Provide mentorship to junior engineers and journeyman technicians, fostering knowledge transfer and technical excellence.
Liaise with FAA officials, contractors, and program managers to support audits, certifications, and long-term system sustainment.
Perform on-call emergency response and travel to remote locations as needed, often under time-sensitive operational demands.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Radio Technologies, Telecommunications, or equivalent; advanced certifications such as PE license or FAA-specific endorsements preferred.
8+ years of progressive telecommunications engineering experience supporting aviation infrastructure, with specific expertise in FAA systems including VSCS, RCAG, and RCO.
Deep proficiency in RF and voice system engineering, network integration, and aviation-specific protocols and tools.
Proven experience managing engineering teams in field environments, including tower operations, remote site work, and harsh conditions.
Valid driver’s license, U.S. citizenship, and ability to obtain/maintain a government security clearance (with drug testing and background check).
Availability for extensive travel (>70%) and flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as dictated by operational needs.
Strong leadership, systems thinking, and communication skills, with demonstrated success in high-impact engineering roles.
