Senior Software Engineer (AWS Cloud Applications)
Location: Remote (US) | Type: Full Time | Experience: 8+ years
About the Role
We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer for AWS cloud application development on a major federal healthcare modernization program. The work focuses on building cloud-native application services, APIs, integrations, and distributed workflows inside an AWS-hosted ecosystem that processes healthcare transactions and backend data at scale.
The right person understands how modern applications use AWS-managed services and event-driven patterns to move, transform, and deliver healthcare data reliably. Fluency with AWS-native application patterns and cloud integrations matters more than specialization in any one programming language. If you've built backend services in .NET/C#, Go, Python, Java, or Node.js and worked deeply with AWS, you'll be set up to do this work well.
This is the seat for an engineer who likes designing distributed systems with retries, idempotency, and fault tolerance baked in, and who knows when AI-assisted development helps versus when it gets in the way.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services that retrieve, transform, and serve healthcare EDI and transactional data
- Build cloud-native services and integrations inside an AWS-hosted environment
- Design event-driven and asynchronous workflows using AWS-managed services and messaging patterns
- Integrate with internal platform APIs, EDI processing pipelines, and cloud data services to deliver live and historical transaction data
- Develop integrations across SQS, SNS, Lambda, S3, EventBridge, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and ECS/EKS
- Write clean, tested, well-documented code and participate actively in peer code review
- Apply unit and integration testing across backend services and API layers
- Use Git and GitHub for branching, pull requests, and collaborative development
Qualifications
Core Backend and AWS
- 8+ years of software development experience, mostly backend, with cloud-native AWS work in production
- Backend fluency in one or more of .NET/C#, Go, Python, Java, or Node.js
- Strong understanding of AWS application integration patterns (async messaging, event-driven workflows, API integrations, managed service interactions)
- Hands-on with SQS, SNS, Lambda, S3, API Gateway, EventBridge, DynamoDB, ECS/EKS, and CloudWatch
- Experience designing cloud-native APIs and distributed integrations
- Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (equivalent practical experience considered)
Data and Healthcare Context
- Experience consuming and transforming JSON, XML, and EDI transactions in application code
- Direct experience with healthcare EDI formats and transaction processing workflows
- Familiarity with distributed-system concepts: retries, idempotency, async processing, fault tolerance, service resiliency
Quality and Practice
- Unit and integration testing with JUnit, xUnit, Jest, pytest, or equivalents
- Git/GitHub collaborative development
- Agile delivery (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, or similar)
- Strong attention to detail around healthcare data accuracy and fidelity
Responsible AI Use
- Sound judgment for when AI-assisted code generation fits and when manual engineering review, security review, or deeper analysis is required
- Awareness of the limitations, risks, and verification requirements that come with AI-generated code in regulated environments
Required Certifications
- AWS Certified Developer Associate
Nice to Have
- Healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations
- Federal healthcare systems, claim attachment workflows (X12 275), or related transaction types
- HIPAA compliance for APIs and healthcare applications
- Containerized application development
- CI/CD workflows and automated testing pipelines
Clearance
- US Citizenship required, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
Why Join Us
You'll be on a team that takes distributed systems seriously: retries, idempotency, observability, and the kind of resiliency healthcare data actually needs. The platform is AWS-native, the work is technical, and the customer is a federal healthcare mission with real stakes. Remote, senior, and built for engineers who care about doing the work right.
