The Role: Senior Frontend Developer

As a senior frontend developer at Earthshot, you will lead the frontend development of our mapping application, LandOS. You will also help to act as a product lead for the application, shaping its future. This application is an internal application, soon to be launched externally!

With your expertise in React and Next.js, you will inherit ownership of this application, and grow it to be a valuable analytics tool for scientists, investors, and developers in the carbon credit market. Ideally you will not only have expertise in frontend JS development, but also be familiar with backend technologies such as Python and FastAPI. Your understanding of the users will help you to identify new features and define priorities.

1-year outcomes

You will have taken full ownership of the front-end portion of our LandOS application, collaborated with the entire technical and science teams to ship new features into production, and met the entire team at one of our annual retreats.

Responsibilities

Lead the development of the LandOS front-end, crafting a sophisticated and integrated information platform that merges diverse data streams and analytical insights into a cohesive user experience.
Oversee the full project lifecycle, from initial conception and design through to deployment and continuous improvement, ensuring high-quality outcomes and efficient delivery.
Define new features, identify bugs, and prioritize team requests to meet short and long term company goals.
Stay informed about emerging trends and advancements in technology, and leverage this knowledge to enhance the platform's ability to facilitate and support global ecological restoration efforts.
Identify trends in user analytics and steer development priorities in response.

Skills and qualities for the role

Proficient in writing modern, effective JavaScript (ES6/ES7/TypeScript) for both client and server environments
Experienced with PostgreSQL databases
3+ years of hands-on experience developing dynamic user interfaces with React
6+ years of experience building frontend applications using JavaScript
Skilled in Next.js or similar frameworks for server-side rendering and efficient frontend development
Experience implementing testing frameworks and writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests
Experience tracking user data with analytics frameworks such as Google analytics, and applying that with user research
Demonstrated expertise with web mapping libraries such as Mapbox
Proficient in deploying web applications to major cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Vercel)
Strong understanding of distributed systems and modern data architectures, including both SQL and NoSQL databases
Proven ability to manage and present complex datasets effectively within web environments
Excellent design skills and attention to detail
A deep love for nature and a desire to help build a more integrated future for humanity within it

Nice to Haves:

Experience working at early-stage startups, contributing across the stack in fast-paced environments
Skilled in building responsive, accessible UIs using Tailwind CSS
Experience working with Supabase or Firebase
Proficient in backend development with Python and FastAPI
Familiarity with geospatial tools and libraries, including Google Earth Engine, GDAL, and GeoPandas
Experienced in handling geospatial raster and vector data formats such as Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF, NetCDF, GeoJSON, and KML
Understanding of the nature-based carbon credit space and its role in climate solutions
