Job Title: Biomedical / Mechanical Engineer – Ophthalmic Suction Device Design
Project Description:
We are seeking a qualified Biomedical or Mechanical Engineer with demonstrated experience in medical device design and development, particularly within the surgical instrumentation domain. The objective is to design a micro-suction-based device that facilitates controlled ocular positioning during pterygium and related ophthalmic procedures.
The device will interface directly with the ocular surface and must adhere to biocompatibility, sterilization, and ergonomic standards applicable to Class I or II medical devices.
Scope of Work:
- Develop detailed CAD models of the suction device, including ergonomic considerations for surgical handling.
- Recommend biocompatible materials (e.g., medical-grade silicone, thermoplastic elastomers, or similar polymers).
- Design a micro-suction or vacuum-assisted mechanism providing stable yet atraumatic adhesion to the ocular surface.
- Integrate threaded control arms or rotational handles to allow precise fixation and manipulation of eye positioning.
- (Optional) Support prototype fabrication and feasibility testing.
- Provide recommendations aligned with FDA, ISO 10993, and ISO 13485 design standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience designing medical or surgical devices, preferably in ophthalmology or microsurgery.
- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of biocompatible materials, microfluidic/suction mechanisms, and human factors engineering.
- Familiarity with risk analysis (FMEA) and design control documentation.
Deliverables:
- CAD design package (native and export files)
- Material and suction system specifications
- (Optional) Prototype design and vendor coordination documentation
Contract Details:
- Contract / Freelance engagement
- Remote collaboration acceptable
- Competitive compensation based on experience and project scope
If you have experience developing precision surgical tools and are comfortable working from concept through early design validation, please submit your portfolio or relevant project examples.
