Location: Kuala Lumpur (Remote)
Company: CitySage Sdn. Bhd.
Team: Data & AI
Type: Full-time, Individual Contributor with PM responsibilities (approx. 70% engineering / 30% delivery)
Company Overview
CitySage is Southeast Asia’s first AI‑powered urban intelligence company & platform, built to help cities become wiser (not just smarter), more resilient, and human‑centred. Backed by Cradle, MDEC Malaysia Digital, and a growing ecosystem of public‑ and private‑sector allies—including PLANMalaysia, municipal councils in Johor and Selangor, academic collaborators at UiTM, Sunway University, UTM and Oxford Uni (UK), and leading regional GIS providers (e.g. Map2U)—we fuse hybrid cloud‑native infrastructure with a constellation of AI Digital Workers such as C‑Kimi (Data Governance) and C‑Siti (Urban Planning). Our platform turns fragmented geospatial, mobility, environmental, and socioeconomic data into real‑time insights and autonomous actions. By bringing human experts and AI together in a single collaborative workspace, CitySage is already accelerating zoning approvals, disaster response, and smart‑city initiatives—unlocking new data‑driven business models and setting the stage for truly wise cities.
The Role
We’re hiring a mid-level (3-5 years) Software Engineer cum Project Manager to ship production systems on cloud platforms (GCP preferred), and hybrid environments (eg. on-prem and cloud), and lead delivery for cross-functional projects. You’ll turn ambiguous planning problems into scalable software, coordinate timelines and stakeholders, and ensure we deliver measurable impact.
What You’ll DoEngineering (≈70%)
- Design, develop, deploy, and maintain backend services and APIs across various cloud platforms (private and public) and on-premise servers, supporting the entire software lifecycle from development to deployment in customer-facing environments.
- Rapidly prototype internal tools and external features using accelerators/low-code platforms, then extend and harden them for quality, security, and performance.
- Implement and maintain APIs, and integrate with existing internal and external data sources.
- Collaborate cross-functionally on data and AI features; focus is on application/service implementation (no heavy ETL or model training).
- Integrate AI/LLM capabilities where required (implementation only).
- Write clean, testable code in modern backend languages and contribute to CI/CD/CT, containerization, and deployment pipelines.
- Instrument applications for reliability and observability (structured logging, metrics, tracing, alerting).
Project Management (≈30%)
- Own project delivery end-to-end: scope, roadmap, sprint planning, risk & issue management, stakeholder communications, following agile methodologies.
- Run stand-ups, demos, and retros; keep project management boards healthy and transparent.
- Translate domain problems into technical plans, estimates, and acceptance criteria; ensure on-time, on-quality releases.
- Coordinate with customers (government, developers, planners) for requirements, UAT, and rollouts.
Tech You’ll Work With
- Cloud & Hosting: GCP (Cloud Run, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage); Vercel (Next.js) for web apps.
- App & APIs: TypeScript/Node.js, Next.js (API Routes), Express (for Cloud Run services), Hasura GraphQL (maintenance).
- Prototyping: Lovable for rapid scaffolding and internal tools.
- Infra & Quality: Docker (for Cloud Run), GitHub Actions, unit/integration tests, OpenAPI/GraphQL schema-first design.
- Ops & PM: Asana; Scrum/Kanban.
What You’ll Bring (Must-haves)
- 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 1 year shipping on a major cloud (GCP preferred).
- Solid backend engineering in TypeScript/Node.js; practical SQL skills (PostgreSQL/BigQuery).
- Hands-on experience with containers and CI/CD; able to take a prototype to production.
- Demonstrable project delivery: you’ve led or co-led a project from scoping to release, managing timelines and stakeholders.
- Clear communication, structured thinking, and ownership mindset.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Malay (client-facing for the PM side).
Nice to Have
- GraphQL/Hasura experience; API gateway and auth (JWT/OAuth) patterns.
- Geospatial data handling experience (BigQuery GIS, PostGIS).
- Frontend skills (React/Next.js) for admin dashboards or lightweight UIs.
