Overview
The Principal Data Scientist is responsible for delivering data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) projects for Acute Care and Inpatient Operations, aligning data science initiatives with the priorities of our organization, and collaborating with clinical and operational leaders to drive data-driven decision-making in alignment with our strategic goals. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer, the Principal Data Scientist plays a pivotal role for the AI Center of Excellence (The AI IDEA Lab), assisting in efforts to build a strategic roadmap for AI at Children's Mercy, as well as assisting with AI governance processes and standards. Principal has mentorship responsibilities, assisting other Children's Mercy team members by communicating best practices in advanced analytics, data science, and machine learning.
Responsibilities
- Develop, deploy, and maintain complex algorithms, in support of Acute Care and Inpatient Operations, resulting in insightful output that integrates with our Patient Progression Hub (and other systems), through the use of our data platform technologies:
- Design, develop, and implement algorithms to analyze complex healthcare data, providing actionable insights to guide operational strategy and improve patient outcomes.
- Utilize advanced machine learning techniques to perform in-depth analysis of healthcare and/or operational data, identifying patterns and insights to improve patient outcomes.
- Work with leaders, stakeholders, and collaborators to proactively identify desired clinical and/or operational outcomes associated with a given data science project.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate model outputs with existing systems and workflows, ensuring seamless data flow and utilization.
- Ensure scalability and reliability of analytical output by utilizing our cloud-based data platform (as well as other software solutions and data science tools) to explore large, complex data sets, as well as to manage and deploy models.
- Explain complex and technical details to non-technical collaborators, ensuring accurate and mutual understanding of the underlying context of a project, as well as the resulting insights of each analytical endeavor.
- Develop and deploy enterprise-level, production-grade, and impactful machine learning products by way of maintainable code, automated testing, and CI/CD processes.
- Ensure all data handling and analysis practices comply with ethical standards and regulations, prioritizing patient confidentiality, data security, and the responsible use of sensitive pediatric health information.
Provide leadership in building and sustaining a robust, enterprise-wide strategy for utilizing Artificial Intelligence at Children's Mercy:
- Partner with other members of the AI IDEA Lab to develop organization-wide standards and best practices for the development, deployment, and management of AI solutions.
- Continually seek and coordinate opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst AI and data science stakeholders at Children’s Mercy.
- Regularly review scientific literature, attend conferences, and participate in educational opportunities to stay updated on the latest advancements in data science and AI, particularly those relevant to pediatric healthcare.
- Assess emerging data science tools and AI technologies for potential integration into hospital systems, ensuring they meet the specific needs of pediatric care.
Provide guidance to leaders, engineers, and data scientists to drive the design, development, and adoption of data science solutions:
- Mentor less experienced team members and provide coaching as needed.
- Prepare content for inclusion in publications and public presentations by articulating clear depictions of methodologies, interpretation of results, and effective design of data visualizations.
- In partnership with other Data Intelligence team members, develop and deliver AI literacy content to stakeholders across Children’s Mercy.
- Provide consultation to other technologists and leaders on emerging best practices in data science and analytics solution development.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Data Science, or related area of study, and 6+ years in health care analytics or data science OR
- Master's Degree in Data Science or related area of study and 8+ years in health care analytics or data science OR
- Bachelor's Degree in Data Science or related area of study and 10+ years in health care analytics or data science.
