About Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA)

The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) is the largest philanthropic funder of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) research globally. At the heart of our funding initiatives lies the CMTA’s Strategy to Accelerate Research (STAR), bringing the best CMT researchers, clinicians, and experts in therapy development together with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and patients to expedite the development of treatments and a cure for CMT.

Position Summary

The Director of Marketing, a fully remote opportunity, is responsible for overseeing the marketing, communications, public relations strategies and activities, and IT functions of the organization to ensure delivery of the highest quality mission services to the CMTA community. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Marketing manages three full time staff associates to deliver all aspects of the organization’s marketing efforts including print, digital, website and social media marketing, and relationships with communications and marketing vendors.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Marketing will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • Raising the profile of the CMTA brand with a holistic strategy for the key messaging, branding, and marketing activities of the organization.
  • Managing, mentoring, and reviewing staff associates.
  • Developing and executing the marketing, communications, and public relations strategies of the organization, in collaboration with the Digital Marketing Manager, Head of Communications, and external consultants, vendors, and collaborators.
  • Implementing metrics and tracking mechanisms to measure the effectiveness of marketing and communications across print and digital mediums.
  • Leading and managing all online marketing efforts, improve CMTA’s online presence through SEO optimization, and monitor and track metrics and visibility through various online data analytics.
  • Supporting the various activities of the organization by utilizing marketing and communications vehicles to engage individual, corporate, foundation, and major donors to participate in fundraising campaigns and CMTA activities.
  • Working with the CEO to develop and manage the budget for all marketing, communications, and public relations activities.
  • Working collaboratively with the Chief Research Officer to develop the strategy for marketing and communication plans for scientific data, information, and requests from partners, researchers, and the patient community.
  • Working collaboratively with the Chief Engagement and Gift officer to develop strategies and materials to support fundraising and mission-related activities.
  • Working collaboratively with the Director of Community Outreach to develop the strategy for marketing and communication plans for community efforts
  • Developing and managing the annual communications calendar and schedule for the organization.
  • Fostering an organizational climate that supports the core values.
  • Representing the organization as a spokesperson and media representative.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related professional experience (previous experience in a nonprofit organization at the national/regional level is highly preferred and desired).
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design and execution of marketing, brand, communications, and public relations activities.
  • Experience developing constituent-centric brand and marketing initiatives for both mission delivery and development.
  • Ability to create and identify key message strategies and organizational communications plans to deliver on those strategies.
  • Excellent strategic planning, organization, and interpersonal skills combined with a collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented approach, and a commitment to innovation and problem-solving.
  • Ability to be successful working independently as well as in a flexible, fast paced, and changing team environment. Experience working in a remote team is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of digital and social marketing programs including social media, digital production, and analytics.
  • Team player who creates credibility and enthusiasm among external and internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Technical proficiencies including Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, CMS/CRM software, and working with an Email Service Provider.
  • Experience with launching a website and branding/messaging initiative.
  • Active participant in digital and social media channels.
  • Experience developing and implementing media advocacy strategies to achieve public policy objectives.
  • Technical savvy in all marketing areas including digital marketing, social media, digital fundraising strategies and direct response.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets, working with, and supervising vendors and external agencies.
  • Ability to cultivate, create, and motivate volunteer committees, including board members.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with the desire and ability to grow the Marketing function as the organization grows.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
