Change.org is looking for a talented and motivated Software Engineer to join our Supporter Experience team. This team is responsible for increasing the number of signatures on petitions by optimizing sharing behavior and engagement across the platform. You will work on projects that directly impact our most important business metrics by improving how users share and spread petitions.

We’re a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the world's largest social change platform, with 100 million monthly users, over 40,000 campaigns launched on the site every month, and a 100% user-generated, profitable revenue model. Our users win campaigns for change once every hour. In the last decade in Mexico, from the mobilization against the Maya train to the campaign to increase vacation days, many nationwide movements were created on Change.org. From the campaign Cáncer Warriors to ask for the release of the elephant Eli, dozens of local, national and international victories are happening every day thanks to the power of our users who are changing our country.

Key Outcomes:

  • Growth Optimization: Contribute to the development and improvement of features that help users share petitions more frequently and effectively, increasing the platform’s virality.
  • Share Experience Enhancement: Help enhance sharing experiences across key user touchpoints, such as after signing a petition, during supporter flows, and within user profiles.
  • New Engagement Opportunities: Support the implementation of new sharing experiences, including features like role-based engagement, personalization, and new social channels (e.g., TikTok, YouTube, Discord).
  • Supporter Engagement: Assist in improving communication channels like email, notifications, and supporter pages to drive higher engagement and repeat actions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with designers, product managers, and other engineers to build scalable systems that make petition sharing and supporter engagement more impactful.

Core competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Experience in full-stack development with an emphasis on building scalable, reliable systems.
  • Solid understanding of frontend technologies such as React, JavaScript, and TypeScript to help deliver smooth, accessible user experiences.
  • Working knowledge of backend development with Node.js and TypeScript, along with a foundational understanding of databases and query optimization.
  • Experience building and integrating with RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL for data-driven applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or GCP) and CI/CD tools and workflows.
  • Exposure to growth engineering principles like A/B testing, experimentation, and analytics tracking.

Planning & Execution:

  • Break down tasks into actionable steps with guidance and support, ensuring they fit into the larger project goals.
  • Help clarify technical requirements and align them with team and business objectives.
  • Manage personal workload effectively, balancing quality, speed, and technical considerations.
  • Identify roadblocks or gaps and propose thoughtful solutions to move the work forward.

Architecture & Design, Performance:

  • Basic understanding of software performance, instrumentation, and experimentation tools.
  • Contribute to the quality and reliability of code through testing, documentation, and adherence to best practices.
  • Participate in discussions about system design and performance improvements, offering insights and learning from more senior engineers.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and QA to ensure the technical implementation supports user and business needs.
  • Communicate technical ideas clearly within the team and adapt explanations for different audiences.
  • Contribute to a culture of best practices around development, performance, and security.
  • Actively participate in a collaborative and inclusive team environment that values continuous learning and diverse perspectives.

Target Experience:

  • 2-4+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in a growth or engagement-focused role.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with React, TypeScript, and GraphQL in production environments.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in Node.js.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code technologies, including Terraform, Kubernetes, and AWS, to ensure scalable and secure system architecture.
  • Experience working on growth-related projects, such as virality, social sharing, engagement loops, or referral programs.
  • Experience optimizing email marketing, push notifications, or other re-engagement strategies is a plus.
