Canopi is a workforce risk intelligence platform built for ground transportation operators. We answer the question carriers cannot afford to get wrong: is every driver on this roster eligible to operate right now?

Our AI engine, ABi, short for Autonomous Business Intelligence, continuously monitors driver eligibility signals, interprets what they mean, and surfaces real-time alerts before a carrier loses a driver, gets fined, or faces a liability event. We are not a compliance tool. We are the autonomous brain that makes driver risk intelligence possible at scale.

We are a Microsoft for Startups company with access to significant Azure infrastructure credits, which means we build to enterprise-grade standards from day one. Our entire stack lives on Azure and we are building ABi to be one of the most defensible AI platforms in the workforce compliance space.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong Azure expertise to join the Canopi engineering team as an independent contractor. You will work under the direction of our VP of Engineering and own specific Phase 1 modules of ABi's core platform independently once work is assigned.

This is a ground floor opportunity at a company that is building something that does not exist in the market today. You will not be maintaining legacy code or working on incremental features. You will be building the foundation of an AI platform that we intend to take to acquisition.

Compensation

This is an equity-only contract engagement at this stage. Base compensation will be introduced once we close our seed round. Equity details including share amount and vesting schedule will be discussed during the interview process. All equity is subject to a 6-month cliff consistent with the rest of the Canopi team.

What You Will Build

You will own specific modules including:

• FMCSA API Integrations
• Azure Event Hubs pipeline for real-time signal streaming and continuous eligibility monitoring
• Azure Cosmos DB data model implementation, input-agnostic schema for normalized risk signals
• Azure Logic Apps workflow automation for alert delivery and carrier notifications
• Azure Monitor logging infrastructure, every ABi determination logged with rationale, confidence, and timestamp
• Carrier data ingestion workflows for MVR reports, medical certificates, and ELD data

What We Are Looking For

Required

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong backend fundamentals
• Hands-on experience building on Microsoft Azure, specifically Cosmos DB, Event Hubs, Logic Apps, and Azure Monitor
• Strong API integration experience, ability to work with public government APIs and third-party data providers
• Experience with event-driven architecture and real-time data streaming
• Ability to work independently once a module is assigned without requiring heavy direction or oversight
• Strong communication skills, you will be working remotely with a small distributed team

Strongly Preferred

• Experience integrating with Azure OpenAI Service or similar LLM APIs
• Familiarity with Azure Machine Learning or ML pipeline infrastructure
• Prior experience building in regulated industries such as compliance, healthcare, finance, or transportation
• Experience at an early stage startup where you have owned modules end to end
• Python or Node.js proficiency depending on stack alignment with the VP of Engineering

• Experience in trucking or transportation

The Team

You will work directly under our VP of Engineering, who brings 30 years of engineering experience and is architecting ABi's full Azure infrastructure. Our Product Lead owns the product roadmap and spec. Our CEO, Bionka Randolph, brings 15 years of talent acquisition experience including creating operations recruiting strategy at Amazon and leading global talent acquisition at Luminar Technologies, and founded Canopi after seeing the credentialing fragmentation problem firsthand.
