Systems Software Engineer (C++ / Rust)
Hourly Contract | Fully Remote | $200 per hour (average inclusive of bonuses)
1. About the Role
Mercor is partnering with leading AI research labs to engage experienced Systems Software Engineers with deep expertise in C++ or Rust.
In this role, you’ll design and validate complex coding benchmarks that simulate real-world systems engineering challenges. Your work will directly support AI research efforts by improving how advanced AI models understand and reason about systems-level programming, performance, and architecture.
This is a part-time, fully remote opportunity ideal for engineers passionate about both high-performance computing and frontier AI research.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and validate coding benchmarks in C++ or Rust, emphasizing object-oriented and systems-level design principles.
- Curate tasks, solutions, and test suites derived from real-world, production-grade repositories.
- Ensure all benchmarks include comprehensive unit and integration tests for verification and reproducibility.
- Debug, optimize, and document benchmark code to ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Provide structured feedback on solution quality, clarity, and adherence to best practices in systems programming.
3. Ideal Qualifications
- 3–10 years of professional experience as a systems software engineer, preferably at a top-tier tech company or U.S. national lab.
- Advanced proficiency in C++ or Rust, with a strong understanding of memory management, concurrency, and performance optimization.
- Experience with debugging, testing, and validating low-level or mobile applications.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills, with an ability to explain technical reasoning clearly.
- Proven ability to work independently and deliver results in a remote, asynchronous environment.
4. Project Timeline
- Start Date: Immediate
- Duration: 1 month
- Commitment: Part-time (15–20 hours/week)
- Schedule: Fully remote and asynchronous — flexible working hours
5. Compensation & Contract Terms
- Base Rate: $90/hour
- Bonus: Additional pay per approved benchmark task (each task ≈ 1 hour to complete)
- Median Effective Pay: ~$200/hour (inclusive of bonuses)
- Classification: Independent Contractor (via Mercor)
- Payments: Daily via Stripe Connect for completed and approved work
