Job Summary

We are seeking a Lead Data Scientist to join the Assortment Data Science team. This high-impact role will focus on optimizing product assortment at the store level, helping to localize offerings and better serve customers. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in building and deploying optimization models, possesses strong communication skills, and can guide a growing data science team.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, development, and deployment of optimization models to support macrospace and microspace assortment decisions.
Collaborate with cross-functional partners including product managers, data engineers, software developers, and merchandising stakeholders to translate business goals into technical solutions.
Serve as a technical mentor and coach for junior and senior data scientists, contributing to a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture.
Take ownership of version 2.0 optimization efforts, evaluating enhancements and prioritizing features that align with strategic business objectives.
Ensure smooth transition from contractor-built models to company owned solutions, focusing on scalability, performance, and maintainability.
Engage with data engineering and IT teams to align infrastructure and deployment processes (e.g., Kubernetes, pipeline management).
Contribute to interview processes and team growth strategy as the group scales in 2025 and beyond.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Research), or equivalent experience.
Experience: Minimum 5+ years total experience, with at least 1–2 years in a formal lead or senior-level capacity.
Skills:
Hands-on experience building and deploying optimization models in production.
Proficiency with Python, SQL, and optimization libraries (preferably Gurobi, or open-source equivalents).
Familiarity with cloud environments and production pipelines.
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Understanding of consumer behavior modeling, demand transfer, and retail analytics.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in retail or consumer packaged goods (CPG) industries, particularly in assortment, pricing, or supply chain optimization.
Experience working with cross-functional product teams and knowledge of data science best practices in production environments.
