CAD Technician – Transmission (Mid-Level)
Location: Lakewood, CO (Open to Remote)
Pay Scale: $25/hr.-$35/hr.
About the Role
We are seeking a mid-level CAD Technician to support transmission engineering projects up to 500kV by preparing accurate layouts and technical design drawings. This individual will work closely with engineers and project teams to deliver high-quality drafting packages that meet client standards, timelines, and budgets.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, modify, and maintain AutoCAD drawings (≈85% of role) in alignment with NEI drafting standards and project requirements
- Translate engineering concepts, specifications, and markups into accurate, high-quality drawing packages
- Produce and update core deliverables, including:
- Assembly drawings
- Framing drawings
- Cover sheets
- Special crossing exhibits
- Foundation drawings
- Interpret and implement engineering markups and redlines, ensuring accuracy and design intent are maintained
- Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and project teams to align deliverables with project scope, timelines, and technical requirements
- Utilize Excel for data linking and drawing coordination across multiple design packages
- Support underground transmission design efforts using Autodesk Civil 3D, including utility identification and crossing analysis
- Participate in live collaboration sessions to review designs, incorporate feedback, and iterate in real time
- Manage and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously across various design stages, from early development through submittal
- Maintain a high level of accuracy, organization, and documentation quality in a dynamic, fast-paced project environment
Team Structure & Environment
- Transmission department consists of ~11 team members across 2 engineering teams
- Reports directly to a Team Lead
- Works closely with:
- Phase Project Manager (PPM – senior engineering lead)
- Design Engineers
- Designers
- QA/QC resources
Required Qualifications
- 1–5 years of experience in CAD drafting/design (AutoCAD-heavy environment)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (non-negotiable)
- Experience collaborating with engineering/design teams
- Strong communication and ability to interpret redlines/markups
- Experience with Microsoft Excel for coordination and data linking
- Associate degree in a related field (or equivalent experience)
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D (especially for underground transmission work)
- Exposure to PLS-CADD or transmission line design tools
- Background in power systems, utilities, or transmission projects
- Familiarity with tools like Bentley MicroStation or similar platforms
