POSITION OVERVIEW
We are looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to help build the backend foundation. This role is focused on designing and developing robust backend services, APIs, and application logic, while also helping integrate our computational engine into a modern SaaS platform.
You will work closely with front-end developers, infrastructure/DevOps engineers, scientists, and other stakeholders to build scalable, secure, and maintainable systems that support complex scientific workflows in biopharmaceutical process development. This is a high-ownership role with meaningful impact on platform architecture, backend quality, and long-term product scalability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Backend Engineering and Platform Development
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend services and APIs.
- Build core application logic and backend platform components for the Insilico Suite.
- Support the integration of the computational engine into the SaaS application architecture.
Engine Integration and Workflow Support
- Design and implement robust interfaces between the web platform, backend services, and computational engine.
- Work closely with scientific and technical teams to support complex modeling and data-processing workflows in production systems.
- Ensure backend systems can reliably orchestrate, execute, and return results from computational workloads.
Architecture, Quality, and Reliability
- Contribute to backend architecture decisions with a strong focus on scalability, maintainability, security, and performance.
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks, reliability issues, and architectural weaknesses across backend systems.
- Implement strong engineering practices around testing, error handling, logging, monitoring, and observability.
Collaboration and Delivery
- Collaborate closely with front-end engineers, infrastructure/DevOps, and domain experts to deliver end-to-end product functionality.
- Work effectively within modern CI/CD and cloud-based software delivery environments.
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation for services, interfaces, workflows, and architecture decisions.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
Required
- Strong professional experience in Python for backend development.
- Strong experience designing and building backend services, APIs, and application logic in production environments.
- Experience with backend frameworks such as FastAPI or similar modern Python frameworks.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, service design, and maintainable code structure.
- Experience with REST APIs, asynchronous processing patterns, and backend integration design.
- Experience working with databases, data models, and data-intensive applications.
- Experience with Git, testing, and CI/CD workflows in a professional software development environment.
- Good understanding of cloud-based application development, containerization, and production software operations.
- Strong understanding of security, reliability, and maintainability in production SaaS systems.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Familiarity with Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform
- Experience in scientific software, data-intensive platforms, or regulated environments
- Experience with workflow orchestration or execution of computational jobs
