We are hiring a Senior Data Scientist

We integrate soil microbiology into agricultural decision-making to optimise farming practices and reverse the degradation of arable soils. With labs across the globe, customers on 4 continents, and 1M+ acres of land impacted, Biome Makers has revitalised soil functionality and agricultural sustainability worldwide.

We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist with strong programming skills, advanced knowledge of statistical and machine learning modeling, and experience working with biological and environmental datasets, including microbiome data. You will play a key role in designing and implementing robust and reproducible analytical solutions, including the integration of geospatial (GIS) data and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins into modeling pipelines.

Location: Spain (remote)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement statistical and machine learning models applied to complex biological and environmental data, including microbiome datasets.
  • Rapidly prototype and evaluate different approaches to novel, unstructured problems and deliver effective solutions.
  • Analyze microbiome and spatial data using reproducible, automated workflows (e.g., RMarkdown, Jupyter).
  • Integrate GIS data (spatial layers, raster/vector models) into predictive and inferential modeling.
  • Maintain well-documented, modular code using version control (Git), following best practices in software engineering and reproducibility.
  • Set up and manage automated workflows using CI/CD tools like Jenkins, to streamline testing, deployment, and reproducibility.
  • Communicate results and statistical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute to planning and delivering tailored analytical solutions for internal projects and external clients.

Job Competencies & Personal Attributes:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, environmental science, or a related quantitative field.
  • 4+ years of experience as a Data Scientist or Statistician (industry or academia).
  • Hands-on experience with biological count or compositional data (e.g., microbiome, gene expression, single-cell).
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical inference and machine learning algorithms (supervised and unsupervised).
  • Strong programming skills in Python and R.
  • Proficiency with version control systems (Git).
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins for workflow automation.
  • Experience developing reproducible data workflows (e.g., RMarkdown, Snakemake, Jupyter).
  • Familiarity with relational databases and querying with SQL.
  • Practical experience working with GIS tools and R libraries.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills; comfortable in distributed team settings.
  • Self-driven and proactive with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
  • Comfort working in Unix/Linux environments.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices and tools (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, containerization, monitoring).
  • Background in soil data or environmental/agri-food applications.
