🎯 We’re Hiring: UX/UI Designer – Defence Learning Experience (Moodle / ADELE O:S)

📍 Location: Canberra (ACT) or Remote (with security clearance)

🔐 Security Clearance: Baseline (minimum required)

📆 Contract Duration: 23 May – 27 June 2025 (with potential extension through June 2026)

👋 About Azooa

Azooa is one of Australia’s most dynamic digital innovation firms, proudly partnering with the Federal Government to design secure, user-centric, and scalable public sector solutions. Based in the ACT, we work on mission-critical projects with impact—building platforms and experiences that serve everyday Australians and frontline professionals alike.

💼 About the Role

We’re looking for a UX/UI Designer who thrives at the intersection of education, secure systems, and human-centred design. You’ll lead a short but high-impact engagement to evaluate and enhance a digital learning hub used across the Australian Defence Force.

This is not a visual branding role. This is practical, mission-driven UX work where success is measured by usability, clarity, and accessibility within the strict standards of the Defence Protected Environment (DPE).

You’ll collaborate with Defence subject matter experts, our project managers, and technical team to identify pain points, conduct user testing, and recommend improvements. It’s a role that blends research, problem-solving, and communication—and requires someone who can work comfortably within structured, secure, and values-led environments.

🧠 Your Key Responsibilities

You’ll start by engaging with stakeholders to understand the learning goals and user journeys within the existing Hub. Then, you’ll plan and conduct usability testing with real Defence users—focusing on how learners access, navigate, and complete content across different ranks and pathways.

You’ll interpret findings and make practical UX recommendations—improvements to layout, navigation, accessibility, and user workflows that align with Moodle’s capabilities and Defence standards.

Working with a developer (as needed), you’ll also help implement quick wins and provide a written report outlining the roadmap for future enhancements. Finally, you’ll support the delivery of resources and guidance to empower CDLE staff to maintain the Hub independently moving forward.

🔍 What You’ll Do

  • Conduct UX research and testing, including user interviews and feedback sessions
  • Design a lightweight UX testing framework tailored for secure LMS environments like ADELE
  • Document learner personas, map learning journeys, and identify friction points
  • Recommend UI and structural enhancements within Moodle’s limitations
  • Deliver a formal UX report, including prioritised fixes and future development opportunities
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure findings are understood, adopted, and actionable
  • Contribute to light content layout or admin-side improvements (no coding required)
  • Prepare simple visual aids such as wireframes, screenflows, or annotated walkthroughs
  • Provide guidance or quick-reference materials for internal Defence users who maintain the platform

🔑 What You’ll Need to Succeed

You have experience working in digital learning environments—ideally Moodle-based—and can confidently assess and improve how learners interact with content. You’re equally comfortable conducting user interviews as you are working with subject matter experts and developers. You know what good UX looks like in complex systems, and how to find and fix usability blockers, even in structured or secure environments.

You’ll also need to be comfortable working in a Defence setting, which means understanding chain of command, respecting process, and operating with care in Official:Sensitive environments.

Key capabilities include:

  • Strong UX research and usability testing skills
  • Familiarity with Moodle, particularly course structure, navigation, and admin configuration
  • Experience working in or supporting ADELE (O:S), or a comparable Defence or government LMS
  • Ability to make practical, compliant UX recommendations (not everything needs a redesign)
  • Excellent communication skills—you’ll be working with educators, not just technologists
  • Experience creating simple UX artefacts such as user flows, test plans, and summary reports
  • A self-starter mindset, with strong attention to detail and autonomy in delivery

🔐 Clearance & Access Requirements

This role requires an active Baseline Security Clearance as a minimum.

Prior experience working in Defence or within secure LMS environments (like ADELE) is highly preferred. You must be comfortable working in compliance with Commonwealth digital security and accessibility standards.

📆 Project Timeline & Deliverables

This is a short-term but focused engagement beginning 23 May 2025 and concluding 27 June 2025. The Commonwealth may extend the contract up to 30 June 2026, depending on the outcomes and future needs.

During the engagement, you will:

  • Produce a detailed UX testing plan
  • Conduct usability testing sessions and document findings
  • Recommend and support implementation of quick enhancements
  • Deliver a UX recommendations report with prioritised actions
  • Provide tools or guides to help CDLE SMEs maintain the platform
  • Participate in weekly check-ins and deliver insights to the Activity Lead
