We are looking for a Software Engineer to help us build and evolve our distributed and scalable Cross Border Services and Solutions. Reporting to a Director of Engineering, you will be a well-rounded software development engineer with experience delivering software at scale in an Agile environment.

Avalara is the worldwide leader in sales and use tax calculation. The work we do is fundamental to electronic commerce. We're the first to admit it - sales tax isn't charming. But improving fundamental business processes -- that's big time. And that's what we're doing every day, bringing technology to bear on the arcane process of sales tax calculation, reporting and remitting.

This is a remote position. The candidate must live in Brazil.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

• Understand product strategy, priorities, metrics and standards to recommend solutions.
• Write reusable, testable, and efficient code.
• Perform code reviews and champion efforts of quality across the team.
• Collaborate with teams to design, and ship new features.
• Address non-functional requirements like security, performance and load for the product.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose and identify failing systems using instrumentation.
• Be part of innovation culture and find ways to increase processes and services.
• Manage priorities, trade-offs, forecast/manage risk, implement solutions in team deliverables.
• Lead conversations across teams and leadership to guide on critical topics.
• Leverage AI copilots, code generation tools, and assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, AmazonQ, ChatGPT) to improve coding efficiency, testing, documentation, and prototyping.
• Continuously upskill in AI-related technologies applicable to daily work.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

• Four-year bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or engineering
• Minimum of 4+ years of experience in a software development role
• Experience working in product-based organizations preferred (most recent).
• Experience in engineering for available and fault tolerant software in a SaaS cloud environment (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Knowledge with monitoring tools and analyzing system metrics for performance and reliability tuning.
• Experience approaching a problem from different angles, analyzing pros and cons of different solutions
• Experience communicating updates and resolutions to customers and other partners

Programming Languages Specific Skills - Must-Have

• 5+ years of full-stack development experience.
• Java and Java common frameworks, such as Spring, Hibernate
• Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and microservices.
• OOPs understanding; Multi-threading; Async programming
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience in JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript.
• Expertise in React.js (or similar modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue.js or Angular).
• Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Proficiency in unit testing and integration testing (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress).
• Version control proficiency using Git (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with modern build tools (e.g., Babel, Webpack, or Vite).
• Knowledge of web performance optimization and browser rendering.
• Familiarity with state management libraries (e.g., Redux, Zustand, or MobX).
• Familiarity with SQL/NoSQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
• Experience in performance/load testing.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform.
• Previous experience working in an Agile development environment.
