What You'll Do

About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Product Designer to join our Product Experience team. While your primary focus will be on creating intuitive SaaS product designs, experience or familiarity with Service Design methodologies is a bonus. This expertise can help elevate the user experience by connecting product interactions to broader service ecosystems, enabling Avalara to deliver a more seamless and holistic experience.

What You'll Do

• Drive user-centered design by conducting user research, usability testing, and applying data-driven insights to design decisions.
• Design engaging and intuitive product experiences for Avalara’s SaaS platforms, ensuring alignment with user needs and business goals.
• Collaborate across disciplines, including Product Management, Engineering, and User Research, to define product requirements and deliver innovative design solutions.
• Design for scalability by creating design systems and reusable components that ensure consistency across Avalara’s SaaS platforms.
• Prototype and iterate on designs using user feedback and analytics to refine the user experience.
• Champion accessibility by designing experiences that comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards and prioritize inclusivity.
• Contribute to service-level improvements, such as user onboarding or support workflows, leveraging a Service Design perspective when applicable.
• Communicate effectively through high-quality visuals, wireframes, storyboards, presentations, and documentation that clearly convey design concepts and align stakeholders.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Research and Ideation

• Conduct user research to deeply understand customer pain points, behaviors, and needs.
• Lead design workshops and brainstorming sessions to foster collaboration and innovation.
• Explore opportunities for service-level improvements, such as optimizing user onboarding or support workflows, leveraging a Service Design perspective when applicable.

End-to-End Design

• Develop user journeys, wireframes, high-fidelity prototypes, and final UI designs for Avalara’s SaaS products.
• Ensure that designs align with business goals, user needs, and technical constraints.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create holistic and intuitive product experiences.

Design Systems and Standards

• Maintain and evolve Avalara’s design system to drive consistency and efficiency.
• Collaborate with front-end developers to ensure design fidelity during implementation.

User Testing and Validation

• Plan and conduct usability testing to gather actionable insights.
• Analyze quantitative and qualitative feedback to iterate and improve designs.

Leadership and Mentorship

• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior designers on the team.
• Advocate for user-centric design practices across the organization.
• Share knowledge of Service Design methodologies (if applicable) to foster a culture of holistic design thinking.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

• 7+ years of experience in product design, with a strong focus on SaaS products.
• Proficiency in design tools like Figma, Sketch, and prototyping tools such as InVision or Axure.
• Strong knowledge of user-centered design principles and design thinking methodologies.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Service Design methodologies, such as journey mapping, service blueprinting, or ecosystem mapping.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts to stakeholders.
• A portfolio that demonstrates your ability to solve complex design problems, with examples of SaaS product designs (and any service-related projects, if applicable).
