Senior Software Engineer

What You'll Do

Avalara operates at global transaction scale, where system performance, reliability, and consistency directly affect customer trust and outcomes. You will help build the backend platforms that power Avalara's global registration, licensing, and compliance services. Working with product managers, architects, engineers, and operations teams, you will provide scalable, reliable solutions that improve automation, operational efficiency, and customer experience. You will oversee medium-to-large technical initiatives, contribute to architecture decisions, and help raise engineering standards across the team. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Engineering and is based in Pune, India ().

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

• Design, build, and support scalable backend services that meet performance, reliability, and availability goals.
• Define and improve platform architecture for global registration, licensing and compliance capabilities.
• Develop RESTful services, scalable data models, and solutions that support complex regulatory requirements.
• Improve code quality, system stability, and maintainability through testing, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
• Resolve production issues by identifying causes and implementing long-term improvements.
• Deliver high-quality features with predictable execution and customer focus.
• Partner across engineering, product, architecture, and operations to solve complex technical challenges.
• Share knowledge, mentor teammates, and help improve team effectiveness.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and 5+ years of backend software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in C#, Go, or Python and experience building RESTful services and backend platforms.
• Experience designing distributed systems and building rules-based or policy-driven platforms.
• Balance scalability, reliability, performance and speed when making technical decisions.
• Experience delivering maintainable, high-quality software in a production environment.
• Experience using AI to improve engineering outcomes through code generation, testing, debugging, observability, or operational efficiency while applying responsible AI and security practices.
