We are seeking a top-performing, versatile, and passionate Senior Software Engineer with over 8 years of extensive experience in software develpment for an open position in our Content Engineering department, where we curate all the tax content needs for various Avalara product suites. The ideal candidate will have solid expertise in software development - back-end (primarily utilizing Python or Java) and front-end (ReactJS or AngularJS or NodeJS), cloud technologies (especially AWS), API development, web applications and CI/CD.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of software solutions to ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of our software products. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define architecture and design, develop components, test and launch software. Additionally, as a gracious presenter and communicator, you should be capable of building strong relationships with peers, partners, and leadership.

About The Content Platform

Avalara's Content Platform is the foundation of our tax compliance solutions. It plays a critical role in ensuring accurate and up-to-date tax content is delivered to our clients. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will have the chance to directly influence this vital platform and our clients' success.

Key Responsibilities

• Design software components for new features in Content Platform
• Maintain and improve existing features
• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to understand requirements and develop innovative, simple, and intuitive technical solutions.
• Work closely with engineers and expert groups on code reviews and test plans, with a focus on automation.
• Own the entire development lifecycle, from planning and design to implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Mentor and coach other engineers to share your knowledge and expertise, fostering a collaborative and learning environment.
• Champion and implement agile/scrum processes to ensure efficient and high-quality development.
• Address non-functional requirements like security, performance, and load for the platform, ensuring its stability and scalability.

What You'll Need to be Successful

Qualifications

• Bachelor's/master’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in a software development role, with a proven record of accomplishment of shipping complex applications to production environments.
• 4 years of experience with designing, implementing, and consuming REST APIs using Java, Python, Go lang or C#.
• 4 years of experience building single page applications utilizing React, Angular, or Vue.js.
• 4 years of experience with Cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Experience with SQL or NoSQL technologies.
• 4 years of experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab, Terraform).
• 4 years of experience with distributed source control tools and development workflow (GitLab or similar).
• Previous experience working in an agile team is essential.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of architectural styles and design patterns to solve complex problems with simple, intuitive designs.

Content Engineering department within Avalara owns and develops platform and applications to process content that powers Avalara's products. The problems we solve are challenging and geographically diverse; we employ latest technologies in Cloud Computing, AI/ML and SRE to engineer robust and flexible solutions that solve problems at scale.
