Java Software Engineer (Quarkus)

Duration: Initial 3 months (with potential extension - project dependent)

Location: Remote / London (Hybrid)

Working hours: Standard UK business hours

Onsite requirements; Hybrid - primarily remote with on-site attendance in London for key meetings

Engagement Type: Outside IR35

Day Rate: Competitive day rate

Atrium Global is supporting a client of ours within the Banking industry who are delivering a large-scale data platform modernisation programme.

Job Overview

We are looking for a Java Software Engineer to join a high-profile engineering programme focused on modernising enterprise data platforms and batch processing capabilities.

The role will focus on developing and optimising cloud-native Java microservices using Quarkus within a modern cloud environment. You will work closely with senior engineers, architects, and delivery teams to build scalable, resilient services deployed within Google Cloud Platform.

This position is suited to an experienced engineer who is comfortable working independently, contributing to technical discussions, and delivering production-grade services within a fast-paced programme.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop cloud-native Java microservices using Quarkus for containerised deployment environments.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and analysts to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration components within the wider platform architecture.
  • Ensure services meet enterprise non-functional requirements including performance, resilience, observability, and security.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering design discussions and development best practices.
  • Support deployment pipelines and container orchestration within Google Kubernetes Engine.
  • Contribute to CI/CD processes including Docker image management and build pipelines.
  • Produce clear technical documentation for engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Work with delivery teams during sprint planning and support the successful delivery of platform components.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and technical leads across the wider engineering programme.

REQUIREMENTS

  • The Java Software Engineer must have 5+ years of professional Java development experience.
  • Hands-on experience developing applications using Quarkus.
  • Experience working within the banking or regulated financial services sector.
  • Strong understanding of Quarkus frameworks including RESTEasy Reactive, CDI, Panache, and Quarkus extensions.
  • Experience with MicroProfile APIs such as Config, Health, Metrics, and Fault Tolerance.
  • Strong understanding of reactive programming and non-blocking I/O patterns.
  • Experience deploying and operating services on Google Kubernetes Engine.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and CI/CD pipelines in cloud environments.
  • Strong experience using Git within structured branching and release management workflows.
  • Experience working within enterprise governance or regulated delivery environments.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate within cross-functional engineering teams.
