Front-End Engineer
Aquia is seeking a Front-End Engineer to join a cross-functional team supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in modernizing the digital forms used for non-disability benefits, including burial, education, and healthcare applications. This role will focus on delivering accessible, user-centered form experiences on VA.gov that reduce friction and promote trust for millions of Veterans and their families. The ideal candidate is passionate about building modular, performant interfaces and collaborating closely with designers, researchers, and engineers in an agile, DevSecOps environment. This position is remote and requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a security clearance.
What You'll Do:
- Design, develop, and maintain React-based user interfaces for critical VA.gov forms and applications outside of disability benefits.
- Build accessible, Section 508- and WCAG-compliant interfaces that support a wide range of users—including those with physical, cognitive, and emotional needs.
- Work within the VA.gov design system to create and enhance modular, reusable components that support consistency across products.
- Collaborate with designers and content strategists to translate Figma mockups and plain language content into effective frontend implementations.
- Integrate frontend logic with RESTful APIs, ensuring seamless data flow, validation, and performance.
- Participate in agile ceremonies and contribute to iterative, research-informed improvements based on Veteran feedback.
- Troubleshoot UI bugs, improve usability, and ensure consistent functionality across browsers and devices.
- Follow GitHub-based development workflows, participate in peer reviews, and support CI/CD pipeline integration.
What We're Looking For:
- 3+ years of experience in front-end development, with expertise in React, JavaScript/TypeScript, and component-based architectures.
- Proven track record developing accessible interfaces that meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.1+ standards.
- Familiarity with responsive design, ARIA roles, semantic HTML, and assistive technologies.
- Experience with state management tools, frontend performance optimization, and integration with RESTful APIs.
- Comfort working within agile teams and collaborating across disciplines including design, content, and backend engineering.
- Proficiency with tools like GitHub, Figma, Mural, and modern CI/CD practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the VA.gov frontend ecosystem or similar civic technology platforms.
- Knowledge of the VA.gov design system, platform collaboration cycle, and open-source contribution practices.
- Background in form-heavy applications, public benefits workflows, or government services.
- Familiarity with Next.js, testing frameworks, and DevSecOps environments.
