The Role

As a Staff Software Engineer at Alium, you'll be a senior contributor helping drive our platform forward. You’ll work closely with the founding team, take ownership of complex features, and help evolve the architecture of our product.

You will assume responsibility for technical decision-making and determining how Alium writes and delivers code, including evaluating and experimenting with AI to improve our velocity and product impact.

What You'll Work On

• Lead development of core features using Rails, Hotwire, and LLM APIs.
• Collaborate with the team to design, plan, and implement scalable solutions.
• Champion code quality, best practices, and performance.
• Contribute to code reviews that are thoughtful and constructive.
• Show your work early with screenshots, videos, prototypes, etc.
• Partner with leadership on technical planning, architecture, and documentation.
• Play a key role in scaling the team, mentoring / leading future hires, and helping us build an ambitious product-driven engineering culture.
• Help define new features, scope large initiatives (e.g. search engine migration), and work cross-functionally with product and design.

Tech & Skills We Value

Essential:

• Deep expertise with Ruby on Rails, including Hotwire
• Willingness to learn and apply AI, both to improve code delivery (Claude Code, Codex, etc) and our product – using LLM to extract insights from (unstructured) data
• Strong communicator – comfortable in async and real-time feedback loops
• Solid with code reviews, and excited to support other engineers
• Comfortable in a nimble, startup environment. You do not need to be closely managed.
• Strong desire to mentor / lead engineers
• Experienced with technical writing, Jira, and well-written AC/tickets
• Deep knowledge of (Postgres)SQL and ActiveRecord
• A passion for designing excellent customer experiences
• No ego, but also deeply knowledgeable with opinions to help build software well

Bonus Points If You...

• Have hands-on experience using AI programmatically
• Know your way around ElasticSearch/OpenSearch or Algolia
• Are not afraid of rapidly evolving codebases (and want to help clean them up!)
• Love building third-party integrations
• Are energized by the early-stage startup journey
