Role: WebRTC/LiveKit Developer — Live-Audio App Audit (Expo/React Native)
Overview
A live-audio broadcast tool for noisy environments (trade shows, sales floors): one person speaks into their phone, streams via WebRTC/LiveKit, and listeners scan a QR code to open a browser stream anonymously — no signup, no listener-side account. The existing codebase was AI-generated (via Fable) and is untested. We need an experienced WebRTC/LiveKit engineer to audit it, confirm technical viability, and then take it to production.
Phase 1 - Audit (initial engagement)
- Get the codebase running; assess overall code quality and structure.
- Verify the WebRTC/LiveKit audio pipeline actually works — broadcast, QR-scan-to-listen flow, and audio delivery.
- Stress-test feasibility of low-latency performance at scale (e.g., many simultaneous listeners on a trade show floor).
- Verify reconnection handling — dropped connections, network handoffs (cellular ↔ Wi-Fi).
- Deliver a clear recommendation: continue building on the existing codebase, or rebuild.
Phase 2 — Build (contingent on audit outcome)
- Harden the app for reliability first: low-latency streaming, automatic reconnection, seamless network transitions. Reliability takes priority over new features.
- Prepare and ship the app to both app stores (iOS and Android).
- Additional features to be scoped after the audit.
Required Skills
- 4+ years experience with Expo and React Native.
- Strong hands-on experience with WebRTC and LiveKit in production.
- TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL.
- Experience with EAS (Expo Application Services) for solo/production builds.
- Comfortable auditing and inheriting untested, AI-generated code — able to quickly assess whether an existing codebase is salvageable.
- Experience with app store deployment (iOS App Store + Google Play).
Nice to Have
- Experience building for high-density, high-concurrency connection scenarios (events, conferences).
- Experience with anonymous/no-auth consumer-facing apps.
