Senior Backend Engineer (Contract/Freelance)

About Avenue

Avenue is a fast-growing event ticketing platform startup building the "Shopify for events." We're creating an all-in-one solution where event organizers can host, manage, and sell tickets seamlessly. After launching 6 months ago, we're experiencing 3X month-on-month growth and scaling rapidly.

The Role

We're seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join our remote-first team of 7 on a contract basis (20-30 hours/week). As we scale quickly, we need someone who has been through startup growth phases and can help steer our technical architecture in the right direction.

What You'll Work On

• Review and optimize our current backend infrastructure for scalability
• Architect and implement scalable solutions across our core systems: notification services, payment processing, and event management
• Ensure our technical foundation can support rapid 3X month-on-month growth
• Guide backend architecture decisions based on proven scaling experience
• Contribute to frontend when needed (primarily backend-focused role)

Technical Stack

• Backend: Node.js, Hono.js
• Frontend: React, TanStack
• Database: PostgreSQL
• Infrastructure: AWS

Requirements

• Proven experience scaling a startup from small to large scale
• Strong backend engineering expertise (Node.js required)
• Experience architecting scalable systems and infrastructure
• Front-end capabilities (React) a plus
• Available to start within 1-2 weeks
