React Native / Expo Engineer - Part-time - EMEA/LATAM/NA

About the Role

We’re building a mobile-first learning platform that transforms powerful nonfiction books into interactive, game-like learning experiences—Brilliant.org for ideas.

We’re starting with Expo for Web (using React Native), so you’ll work in a unified codebase that will later expand to mobile with minimal rework. As our first engineer, you’ll help us prototype fast, iterate on educational interactions, and lay the technical foundation of the platform.

🎯 What You'll Do

• Build and maintain a performant, mobile-first web app using Expo + React Native
• Create modular components for interactive, animated learning flows
• Work closely with our content and learning designer to bring educational games to life
• Set up backend infrastructure (likely Firebase, but open to your input)
• Optimise for cross-platform readiness (web-first, mobile-ready)
• Implement lightweight analytics and tracking for user behavior and learning outcomes
• Contribute to product and UX discussions from an engineering lens

You Should Have

• 3+ years experience with React Native, ideally using Expo
• Strong understanding of responsive design and mobile-first web development
• Experience with Expo for Web, or confidence adapting React Native for the browser
• Familiarity with Firebase, Supabase, or similar backend-as-a-service platforms
• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript skills and Git-based workflows
• Bonus: Experience with animation libraries (e.g., Reanimated, Framer Motion) or interactive front-end work (e.g., visual games, simulations)
