Lead Backend Engineer – AWS Serverless Architecture US-FT

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Backend Engineer to take charge of architecture and delivery on a large-scale AWS serverless platform managing over 100 million events daily. This role requires a hands-on approach and offers significant ownership, allowing you to drive technical direction, make critical architectural decisions, and oversee the end-to-end delivery of production systems. Your expertise in designing and operating production serverless systems on AWS will be pivotal.

Responsibilities

• Lead the backend architecture utilizing AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, EventBridge, SQS, and Step Functions.
• Design and develop APIs (REST/GraphQL) to support high-volume web and mobile workloads.
• Oversee the entire delivery process, from system design to production rollout and ongoing operational support.
• Develop resilient, event-driven services with features like strong observability, retry logic, idempotency, and fault tolerance.
• Make informed engineering trade-offs concerning cost, performance, reliability, and complexity.
• Establish technical standards, mentor fellow engineers, and set development patterns.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate requirements into robust systems.

Required Skills

• Over 8 years of experience in backend engineering at a staff or architect level.
• At least 3 years of experience building production AWS serverless event-driven systems at scale.
• Hands-on expertise with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS, and EventBridge.
• Proven experience in architecture ownership and decision-making.
• Strong backend development skills with Node.js and TypeScript.
• Experience with infrastructure as code and deployment automation using Serverless Framework or AWS CDK.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English for leading technical discussions.
• Ability to work independently with high ownership and standards.
• Familiarity with AI-driven development tools like Copilot, Claude, and Cursor.

Nice to Have

• Experience with enterprise-scale serverless systems, including compliance and operational rigor.
• Background in supporting consumer or mobile-backed systems with millions of daily users or requests.
• Knowledge of operational excellence practices, such as creating runbooks, incident response, and defining SLOs.
• Experience with multi-service orchestration and cross-service event-driven patterns.
• Experience in supporting high-traffic consumer or mobile applications.
