Company: InsureTech startup (stealth)
Engagement: Contract — full-time to start, with potential to convert to a longer-term role
Location: Worldwide (priority: Latin America; open to Europe). Meaningful daily overlap with US Eastern Time required.
About the role
We’re an early-stage InsureTech startup (currently in stealth) building a mobile-first platform that lets users get quotes and manage their insurance across multiple insurance types — all from their phone.
The product is well underway. The web app — a progressive web app — has its mobile and desktop screens built, and we’re now wiring up the integrations, data layer, and partner connections that bring it to life. We’re looking for a full-stack developer to take ownership of the application codebase and help us ship a clean, tested, production-ready product — first on web, then as a companion mobile app.
You’ll own the application end to end: the Next.js front end, the Hono/Drizzle back end and Neon data layer, the authentication and access-control layer, and the integrations that connect us to our insurance partners. A separate engineer owns the Python AI/LLM inference service; you’ll integrate the app with it over a documented API rather than building the model layer yourself.
You’ll work directly with the founder and the current lead developer, who’s moving into an oversight role as you take the codebase forward. It’s a small, hands-on team, so you’ll have real ownership and a direct line to the people making product decisions.
What you’ll do
- Build and polish the front end (Next.js + TypeScript + React) and wire it cleanly to the Hono back end
- Develop and maintain the PostgreSQL data layer (Neon) with Drizzle as the ORM — owning schema, migrations, and query patterns
- Wire up integrations with insurance-specific partner APIs — handling API ingestion, webhooks, and reliable data flow into the database
- Harden the authentication and access-control layer — passwordless auth, TOTP-based MFA, and server-side RLS/RBAC policies so access is tight and well-scoped
- Integrate the app with our in-app AI assistant over a documented API (the AI inference service itself is owned by a separate engineer)
- Review, clean up, and harden AI-assisted code, and test thoroughly so what ships is accurate, secure, and reliable
- Help drive the web app from near-MVP to production launch, then build the companion mobile app (Expo / React Native)
Tech stack
- Front end: Next.js, TypeScript, React, Tailwind CSS
- Back end / data: Hono, PostgreSQL (Neon), Drizzle ORM, REST APIs, webhooks
- Auth: Better Auth, with passwordless sign-in and TOTP MFA; RLS/RBAC for access control
- Storage: Cloudflare R2
- Tooling / infra: TurboRepo monorepo, pnpm, Vercel
- Orchestration: n8n (used for some back-end task logic and webhook flows — exposure is a plus, not required)
- Mobile (next phase): Expo / React Native
- Integrations: Several insurance-specific partner APIs (identity verification, carrier quoting, policy-data ingestion, and prefill), plus an in-app AI assistant backed by a separate Python service
What we’re looking for
- Strong full-stack experience with Next.js, TypeScript, and React
- Solid PostgreSQL skills — comfortable owning schema, migrations, and a typed ORM (Drizzle or similar)
- Experience integrating third-party APIs and building reliable data pipelines / webhook flows
- Awareness of back-end security best practices (RLS, RBAC, modern auth) — applied sensibly from the start
- Good instincts around clean, maintainable code and a habit of testing your own work
- Comfort reviewing and hardening AI-assisted code
- Strong written and spoken English, and comfort working closely with a small founding team
- Able to overlap meaningfully with US Eastern Time for day-to-day communication
Nice to have
- Experience with Expo / React Native (for the companion mobile build)
- Familiarity with Hono or similar lightweight TypeScript API frameworks
- Experience with Better Auth or comparable modern auth (passwordless, MFA/TOTP)
- Monorepo experience (TurboRepo / pnpm workspaces)
- Familiarity with Cloudflare R2 or similar object storage
- Exposure to n8n or similar workflow/orchestration tools
- Experience integrating identity-verification, quoting, or other regulated/financial partner APIs
- Prior experience at an early-stage startup
