Project Overview
I develop and publish Android games using Unity. My current live game has ANR and crash rates above Google Play's acceptable thresholds, and I've had recurring stability issues across multiple projects — I suspect there may be a pattern in how I structure my Unity Android builds that's contributing to this, beyond any single bug.
Current metrics:
- ANR rate: over 1.5% (Google Play's bad-behavior threshold is 0.47%)
- Crash rate: over 1.1% (Google Play's bad-behavior threshold is 1.09%)
Engine & stack:
- Unity, built for Android
- Ad mediation: ironSource LevelPlay, with multiple ad networks connected
What I'm Looking For
I need a senior Unity Android developer to:
- Diagnose the actual root cause(s) of my ANR and crash rates using real ANR/crash data and traces I'll provide (Play Console exports — I have data and am continuing to collect more, but I'm not strongly literate in reading these reports myself, so I'll rely on your expertise to interpret them correctly).
- Audit my project for structural or architectural issues that may be contributing beyond any single bug — I suspect the way I build my games may have recurring patterns that cause instability, and I'd like an experienced second set of eyes on the overall project, not just a patch for one symptom.
- Investigate whether ad mediation (LevelPlay) is a meaningful contributor. I've seen claims that a large share of ANRs in Unity Android games are tied to ad SDKs, though I have no way to verify that myself — please confirm or rule this out with real evidence from my data rather than assuming it's true.
- Fix what's fixable, and clearly tell me what isn't (e.g. platform/OEM-level issues outside what application code can control).
- Clean up and stabilize the project without breaking existing gameplay mechanics or functionality — the game is fully playable and live today; this is a stability and quality pass, not a rebuild.
Target
Bring ANR rate below 0.47% and crash rate below 1.09% (Google Play's official "bad behavior" thresholds).
What I'll Provide
- Unity dev project access
- Play Console ANR/crash trace exports and ongoing Android Vitals data
- Whatever additional context or access is needed once you're in the data
What I'm Not Looking For
- A fix that converts ANRs into crashes (e.g. force-closing the app) to improve one metric at the other's expense
- Changes presented as fixes without a clear, verifiable explanation of why they work
- A promise of 0% ANRs/crashes — I understand that's not realistic; I just want to get under Google's thresholds with a stable, well-explained fix
