West Tennessee Consulting is a nonprofit-focused technology firm dedicated to creating accessible, effective digital tools for social impact. As we prepare our internal applications for production, we are seeking a Backend Infrastructure Engineer to lead critical AWS infrastructure work to ensure our systems are secure, scalable, and cost-efficient.
The Role
You will join our backend team to focus exclusively on infrastructure and backend logic, helping transition our app ecosystem to a robust production-ready state. This includes defining and managing our AWS environment using infrastructure-as-code tools and supporting secure authentication, data delivery, and deployment pipelines.
Responsibilities
- Lead backend development and infrastructure configuration for production readiness
- Set up and manage services using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito, S3, CloudFront, and IAM
- Implement and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform or CloudFormation
- Support CI/CD automation and deployment processes (GitHub Actions preferred)
- Collaborate with the internal team on system design, architecture, and DevSecOps practices
- Conduct performance tuning and cost optimization across AWS resources
- Optional: Integrate Amazon Lex for chatbot capabilities
Tech Stack & Tools
- Cloud Services: AWS (Cognito, Lambda, S3, CloudFront, API Gateway, IAM, Amazon Lex)
- IaC: Terraform or CloudFormation
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions (nice to have)
- Collaboration: GitHub, Slack
What We’re Looking For
- 4+ years of backend or DevOps experience with deep AWS expertise
- Hands-on experience with AWS Cognito, Lambda (serverless), API Gateway, S3, CloudFront, and IAM
- Strong command of infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or CloudFormation
- Proven ability to set up secure, scalable, and cost-optimized infrastructure
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment best practices
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Self-starter able to work independently within a scoped engagement
