Backend Engineer With DevOps & Security Awareness

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer with DevOps & Security Awareness to develop the backend infrastructure for our AI-powered health coaching app. The backend will support user management, check-ins, exercise tracking, AI-driven recommendations, chatbot integration, dynamic workout plans, nutrition/recipe management, and achievements with push notifications.

📌 Responsibilities

• Develop a scalable, secure backend using Python (FastAPI).
• Build and expose RESTful APIs for the Flutter app.
• Implement user authentication & session management using Firebase Auth.
• Store and serve pre-stitched video/audio workouts dynamically based on user preferences.
• Support audio-only workouts for mindfulness and meditation.
• Implement chatbot API integration for Clovo’s AI assistant (Amy) and ensure conversation history is stored in Firestore.
• Develop nutrition and recipe management APIs, allowing users to access dietary recommendations.
• Develop achievement & gamification logic that allows dynamic backend configuration.
• Implement push notification triggers for milestone-based rewards and engagement.
• Store patient check-in data, exercise tracking, and AI-generated recommendations securely.
• Ensure data encryption (at rest & in transit) to meet NHS DSP Toolkit / Cyber Essentials standards.
• Deploy and manage the backend on AWS.
• Implement monitoring & logging for performance tracking.
• Optimize database queries for fast response times (PostgreSQL preferred).
• Assist with security best practices (audit logs, access controls, API rate limiting).
• Conduct load testing to ensure API performance for initial MVP scale.

📌 Requirements

✅ Proven experience in backend development with Python (FastAPI, Flask, or Django).

✅ Experience with cloud platforms (AWS required).

✅ Familiarity with Firebase Auth for authentication & Firestore for chat history.

✅ Database experience (PostgreSQL or MySQL).

✅ Experience deploying, monitoring & scaling APIs (Docker, Kubernetes, or AWS Lambda).

✅ Understanding of secure API development & healthcare data compliance (GDPR, NHS standards).

✅ CI/CD pipeline experience (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Bitbucket Pipelines, etc.).

✅ Ability to work independently and deliver a working backend in ~6-8 weeks.

📌 Nice to Have (Bonus)

• Experience working with AI/ML models in production environments.
• Knowledge of FHIR standards for healthcare data interoperability.
• Familiarity with penetration testing or security audits.
