We are seeking a Principal Data Analyst – Organisational Insights who is strategic, proactive and collaborative to join our Organisational Performance & Strategy (OPS) department. The position will support the delivery of OPS functions by providing advanced data analytics expertise and enhancing strategic, operational and performance reporting. Through this work it will also support the organisation to improve its data governance practices and build data literacy and an organisational culture of evidence-based practice.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Support the Senior Lead – Strategy and Organisational Insights with the development and implementation of an organisational approach to insights and analytics that informs Council strategic and operational planning activities, strategy and policy development, service delivery (including service planning, service reviews, and service design) and performance improvement.
  • Support the OPS department’s organisational planning, strategy, and service planning functions by identifying the organisation’s analytical needs and providing advanced predictive and diagnostic analytics frameworks and dashboards that enable evidence-based strategic and operational decision-making and inform resource allocation and continuous improvement activities.
  • Strengthen organisational reporting by leading the development and maintenance of performance dashboards, tailored to the needs of different audiences, that track and clearly communicate strategic, operational, and service performance.
  • In partnership with the IT department, enhance the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of analytics and performance dashboards by automating the collection and integration of data from multiple systems and sources.
  • Through OPS department projects and activities, support departments, and service areas across the organisation to improve data governance practices and build organisational data literacy to enhance the use of organisational data and data-driven insights in strategic and operational decision-making.
  • In partnership with the IT department, enhance the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of analytics and performance dashboards by automating the collection and integration of data from multiple systems and sources.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and design and deliver innovative data analytics frameworks and dashboards that provide actionable insights and evidence to inform strategy development, service planning, and performance improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining reporting dashboards that effectively communicate strategic, operational and performance outcomes to different audiences and enhance.
  • Expert knowledge of organisational data analytics, data governance and business intelligence principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of tools and platforms used for data integration and visualisation.
  • Ability to interpret, apply and explain legislation, policies and standards relating to data use and privacy.
  • Ability to investigate matters in a logical and analytical manner and present findings in an appropriate format.
  • Ability to communicate strategic and innovative ideas and solutions to the Data Working Group, Senior Leadership Team, and Councillors to inform strategic decision-making.

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Degree in data science and analytics, business analytics or similar with several years’ experience, or a lesser formal qualification with extensive experience, in data analytics at the organisational level.
