The Role

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join our growing team. This is a full-time role that offers flexibility to work remotely, with occasional visits to client sites across the UK. You’ll play a key part in designing and developing scalable, secure software solutions that underpin Espanaro’s products and customer projects.

You’ll lead by example - writing clean, testable code, guiding best practices across projects, and helping shape the architecture of systems deployed within Defence and enterprise environments.

Key Responsibilities

Lead design and development of high-quality software and web applications
Architect and implement scalable back-end systems
Develop and maintain automated testing and CI/CD pipelines
Drive secure-by-design principles and contribute to DevSecOps strategy
Mentor and guide other engineers, promoting quality and innovation
Analyse existing software to identify and implement improvements
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver mission-ready solutions

Core Skills and Experience

Strong foundation in computer science, with excellent software engineering principles
Proven experience with C# (.NET Framework and .NET Core)
Skilled in JavaScript / TypeScript and modern frameworks such as React or Angular
Proficiency with PowerShell and scripting for automation
Experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices architecture
Knowledge of DevSecOps, Configuration-as-Code, and automated testing frameworks
Familiarity with AI/ML integration within modern software systems
Experience designing for scalability, security, and maintainability

Preferred Background

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
Previous experience in Defence, government, or highly regulated sectors
Hands-on work with SQL or other relational databases
Understanding of secure development practices and accredited system environments
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Security and Eligibility

Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, UK Security Clearance (SC)
Minimum of 5 years UK address history required
Must have a valid UK driving licence
