Role - AI Software Engineer (Code Understanding & Reasoning)
Type - Hourly Contract
Mode - Remote
Pay - $85–$125 per hour
About the Role
We’re seeking experienced Software Engineers to support one of the world’s leading AI research labs in advancing code understanding and reasoning capabilities for next-generation machine learning models. In this role, you’ll work on real-world engineering challenges — analyzing large, production-grade repositories to create and evaluate technically complex coding questions. You’ll explore multiple modules, connect related functions across files, and assess how advanced AI systems reason about architecture, data flow, and performance. Your ability to reason from evidence — citing specific files, functions, and line numbers — will directly influence how AI models learn to think like expert engineers.
You’re a Great Fit If You:
- Have 4+ years of elite software engineering experience at top-tier startups, quantitative trading firms, hedge funds, or other high-performance environments.
- Have used AI coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, GPT-4, or Replit Agents) in your development workflow.
- Hold a Computer Science degree from a leading university or have equivalent hands-on expertise.
- Are fluent in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, with the ability to read Java, Go, C++, or Rust.
- Demonstrate systematic exploration — examining dependencies and multiple files before concluding.
- Practice evidence-based reasoning, grounding conclusions in real code references.
- Excel at cross-file synthesis, connecting distributed logic to explain systems end-to-end.
- Show strong architectural insight, recognizing abstractions, design choices, and trade-offs.
- Exhibit intellectual honesty, acknowledging uncertainty when evidence is incomplete.
- Communicate with clarity and precision, producing structured, high-quality technical documentation.
Example Projects & Domains
You may work across diverse systems, such as:
- Web APIs and backend services
- CLI tools and data processing pipelines
- Frontend applications and DevOps tooling
- Security, observability, and performance-critical architectures
Each task will challenge your ability to understand architecture, dependencies, and design across real-world repositories.
