PURPOSE OF POSITION

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is the world’s largest association of Earth and space scientists. Around the world, AGU convenes in groups small and large to share the power of science, the promise of partnership, the possibilities of collaboration and the dire need for climate action. We create a network of mentorship and a new approach to sharing science.

A global community of more than a half million people, AGU advocates for Earth and space sciences - breaking news and sharing research. We mobilize action through our publications, our award-winning magazine Eos , our social platforms, and our work to inform our legislators about important issues for our community. We lead on greater diversity and inclusivity across the sciences. And we innovate, currently engaging in creating an ethical framework around climate and geoengineering.

In addition, AGU enables members at all career stages to build their talents and professional contacts. We ensure that diversity, inclusion, equity, and ethics are sewn into the fabric of all our activities. We invigorate community-based science across urban and rural neighborhoods by spearheading hundreds of projects to address environmental injustices and build a new future of equity and understanding.

Because of its breadth and depth of programs and initiatives AGU’s marketing team needs to reflect these many “clients.” The Marketing Director serves as a key “always-seat-at-the-table” strategic and creative executive. This position requires someone who can speak with authority from experience and thrive, being at home in a collaborative and deeply ‘matrixed’ organization. The marketing team plays an essential role in driving and supporting these changes.

The Director, Marketing and Advertising is a seasoned, highly-skilled and creative marketing and advertising executive and strategist with significant experience in social and digital marketing. A leader in understanding the how, where, when, and why of reaching and affecting people, the Director is able to oversee and nurture a growing, diverse team managing events, campaigns, and analytics to drive AGU’s mission and partner-centric work.

Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Communications , the Director serves as a key member of the department’s management team, as well as serves as the manager to a team of four marketing professionals. This role requires strong leadership and management skills, the ability to make nuanced decisions and exercise good judgment, and expertise in facilitating a collaborative work environment that focuses on accuracy and excellence in all deliverables. This role manages up and down simultaneously requiring the candidate to be able to advocate confidently for SCM while deftly assigning project to their team members, growing their skills and confidence.

Essential Job Duties

  • Leads the development, execution, and assessment of all integrated, relationship-based marketing campaigns.
  • Can manage significant budgeting for creative collateral, media spend and non-traditional marketing efforts.
  • Able to read out and interpret data analytics and plot a course using finding for program and organization-wide success.
  • A digital/social whisperer who can translate patterns and trends in audiences to ensure that marketing and advertising campaigns reflect and support AGU’s mission, vision, strategies, objectives, and priorities, as well as builds word of mouth and a sense of community.
  • Functions as a key member of the Vice President’s senior team.
  • A consigliere to the VP, someone who is trusted to represent SCM to the wider AGU team and beyond.
  • Serves as the key, senior strategist for assigning resources and support to the overall year of meetings, events, campaigns, and communications.
  • Serves on cross-departmental projects and initiatives ; ensures successful collaboration between the marketing team and the various departments and programs they support.
  • Works in collaboration with strategic communications colleagues and others to develop effective messaging across channels and platforms.
  • Serves as a key member of the digital transformation team, focusing on fully utilizing the power of AGU’s new digital platform.
  • Develops and implements a cohesive strategy for AGU’s exhibit program and represents AGU externally at events and conferences.
  • Monitors and investigates marketing trends, as well as trends in scientific publishing, meetings, association membership, and social media strategy to recommend strategy adjustments as needed. Works to educate marketing team and others on the AGU staff on these trends and their potential impact.
  • Develops, mentors, and hires marketing department staff.
  • Develops the annual budget for review by the Vice President
  • Approves marketing expenditures and tracks the budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Significant years’ experience managing a team that is spread out across event and campaign functions.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills; talented at building consensus and leading cross-functional work teams.
  • A deft delegator who can employ and deploy their team to meet fast-changing needs and changes organization wide.
  • A mentor and model to the marketing team for creative collaboration and strategic leadership
  • Proven experience overseeing data analytics and the socialization of these learnings with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, as well as to set/balance priorities in an agile manner to address constantly evolving requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail and ability to manage complexity.
  • Expertise in integrated, user-focused marketing strategy, including marketing automation.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including message development and copywriting, as well as demonstrated ability to convey ideas across channels and platforms.
  • Significant experience leading an advertising sales program, including managing relationships with outside partners on execution.
  • Experience managing an exhibits program to target a variety of industry events.
  • Knowledge of standard software programs (including Microsoft Office), association management systems (knowledge of NetForum a plus), content management systems (such as Word Press), and a variety of social media channels and management platforms (including Hootsuite), required. Knowledge of Google Analytics, email management programs (such as Real Magnet and Marketo), enterprise platforms (such as SiteCore), and marketing automation strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of measuring work performance and implementing improvement strategies to achieve greater success.
  • Excellent mentoring skills: demonstrated track record of training, coaching and developing staff.
  • Confidence and motivation to operate with independence and to take part in senior leadership efforts as needed.
  • Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years with Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading/managing a large marketing team is required.
  • Experience in leading data analytics funtions
  • Experience in a membership association/not-for-profit and/or scientific or technical organization preferred.
